Harvey Shmidlap Seeks the Perfect Cheesecake by Eugene Shafir

Possible Press is dedicated to the establishment of a brand associated with quality that ensures readers have access to a varied and vibrant stream of Australian Literature which is only homogenous in its originality, artistic excellence and integrity. We are delighted that Eugene's Shafir's comic masterpiece is the first book in our list as it embodies exactly those ideals.

Gourmand and wannabe marketing guru, Harvey Shmidlap wasn't born  great, and living off the family's salami business, the only greatness he's destined for is in terms of his belt size. But the one pie Harvey  doesn't eat is humble, and he has a half-baked plan to make his family great: after the Eponymous Food Organisation - the international body responsible for naming  dishes after their creators - tastes his mother's cheesecake, the name Shmidlap will forever be on everyone's lips.  There are problems, however. Harvey's mother, insists  she can only divulge the recipe to a daughter not him, her only child, and Harvey isn't ready for a sex change ... yet. Instead Harvey tries to enlist the aid of his wife and son in buttering Mum up, but Marla, a vet, is more interested in furry animals than a human who eats like one, and Justin hates everything Harvey stands for. Not that Harvey stands very often. Most of the time he can be found sitting in Helga's cake shop doing his research, that is, eating cake. However, cakes have ears, and not only does Helga get wind of Harvey's mother's cheesecake, but vainglorious gluttons from around the globe soon want a slice of the pie. One man in particular will stop at nothing to get his hands on Shmidlap's eponymous cake – in fact he's even prepared to get his hands on Mrs Shmidlap.

Harvey Shmidlap seeks the Perfect Cheesecake is a book about all that is important in life. It is a book about family, and love, and food ... mostly food. This is a comic novel of the highest water. Like Catch 22 and A Confederacy of Dunces it is in a class of its own, and like those works and a truly great cheesecake, the only way to know what it is like is to really sink your teeth into it and enjoy the feast. And if that's not enough to convince you to buy the book - it contains a recipe for cheesecake.

Bloody Waters by Jason Franks

Jason Franks has been impressing readers with his work in the field of graphic novels and short fiction for a decade with a stream of publications including horror anthologies – Kagemono and Bad Ass Faeries – the darkly humorous McBlack and most recently, the Sixsmiths which could be described as the Simpsons meets Rosemary's Baby. Possible Press is proud to announce it will be publishing Franks's first novel Bloody Waters late in 2011. Bloody Waters is the name of a heavy metal band whose female lead guitarist, Clarice, finds the meteoric rise of her band's career suddenly stalled by a vengeful record company executive. Figuring the only way to beat one devil is with another, Clarise makes a pact with Satan himself in order to get her band out of the doldrums. Franks's characterisations are assured, the plot surprises and alternates scenes of satire and dark humour with those of a more visceral nature. Franks writes some of the best one-liners this reader has had the pleasure to laugh out loud at. A unique reading experience
